The Ones We Left Behind

Following a disturbing dream about his favorite courtesan Drusilla, Philip finds himself restless, unable to stop questioning the paternity of her son he never knew about.  He finally resolves to find out for himself whether or not he is the father.  He visits Casey, asking her to send him back to his original timeline to find out.  Casey tells him the best she can do is send him to the point in his timeline where he departed, giving him, at most, three days to investigate before the timeline ceases to be, when the Guardians defeated the Red Dragon in the past.  She gives him a crystal that will allow him to return to the current timeline, warning him that failure to do so might cause him to cease existing.

Philip arrives in a desolate Hyrule, suffering badly from the attacks of the Red Dragon.  The entire population of suvivors has been resettled on the grounds of North Castle.  As Philip makes his way through, his pockets are picked by a poor street urchin.  A young girl named Jordana points him to a meeting of the leaders of the rebellion, his own mother, Kally, the founder of the Guardians, Lysia, and Tranns' mother, Amanda.  They are discussing the bleak outlook of the war when they are surprised by a visit from Kally's brother Enjolras.  He announces that War has left to hunt down the Guardians and that in his absence, his slaves have escaped including Rotspine, Ariadne's mother.

Desperate to find Drusilla before his time runs out, Philip searches the archives of the castle to find survivor lists.  He is joined by Rotspine, looking to find the lost members of her pack.  The two of them talk.  Philip assures Rotspine that not only did Ariadne survive the Terabithian fire, but that she is happy and safe in the other timeline.  He further confides the reason for his trip back.  Rotspine encourages him, not only to find Drusilla, but also to try and rescue the child, if he is in fact Philip's son, from the end of the timeline.

News of Philip's arrival spreads through the survivors, leading to panic as the people realize they will soon cease to exist.  They begin storming the castle.  It is right around this time that Philip realizes that his pocket has been picked.  Among the stolen items is the device to bring him back to the Phoenix House.  Convinced Jordana has robbed him, Philip and Rotspine go to Lysia, Amanda, and Kally.  Busy dealing with the panic of the people, they give Jordana's name, but leave Philip and Rotspine on their own to deal with her.

Philip and Rotspine manage to find Jordana in the riot.  She swears she didn't rob Philip, giving them name of the street urchin, Damon, who she saw do the deed.  Rotspine and Philip use Damon's scent on Philip's clothing to track him down.  In the chaos, they find him being held hostage by a rioter.  They manage to pay off the greedy refugee and get Damon away.  Damon, unfortunately, explains that he gave Philip's device which he mistook for a Rupee to his mother.  He cannot find his mother, however, since their tent was flattened in the chaos.  Rotspine and Philip agree to help him find her and are shocked to learn that Damon's mother is Drusilla.

The group find their way to Drusilla who is dying of consumption.  Philip asks her if Damon is his son, promising to do what he can to help him.  Drusilla admits she doesn't know, but thinks he is.  She begs Philip to save him from the end and Philip agrees.  He bids farewell to Rotspine, who gives him a necklace that belonged to Ariadne's father.  Philip then returns with Damon to the Phoenix House.  There, Casey confirms that Damon is Philip's child.  He makes the difficult decision to send Damon away to a school where he can be around children his own age.
