A noise from the nursery brings Aden and Adriana running one night. There, they discover that Chandler is missing
and the room has been overturned. Just as they begin to panic, a portal opens and Ione appears. He explains that
a man named Antipas has taken Chandler. Antipas was the last survivor of the original Aki warriors of Gonogah.
Senile and half blind, Antipas has taken it upon himself to destroy Felsen's heir by sacrificing him in a Gonogah temple.
Ione promises to supply Aden and Adriana with a rescuer.
The next day, Ione brings Troy, a girl who is a trained seeker, specializing in tracking down people. She explains
that Antipas has miscalculated his portal and ended up with Chandler in Ebera. She expresses a concern that the old
man does not know what danger he's in. Aden, Adriana, and Pfalz agree to join Troy in Ebera, searching for Antipas,
to bring him and Chandler back before the Ebene realize who they are. Troy opens a portal and the four of them slip
through as Ione looks on nervously.
Their first stop in Ebera, in a seedier neighborhood, is a run down tavern. They spot Antipas slip inside, but
once they catch up, he cannot be found. Pfalz attempts to use her former military rank to get the local bar crawlers
to cooperate, but the drunken men quickly become fascinated with Adriana. A bidding war begins, each man trying to buy
her off of Aden. Although Aden insists she is not for sale, the men continue and soon begin to argue with one another
over who has the proper claim on her. The fighting escalates to a full on bar brawl, during which, Antipas is seen slipping
out. Bruised and bloody, the four rescuers follow him.
Chasing after Antipas and Chandler, the group find themselves in a barracks where an Ebene trainer, Saffron, is busy
working her cadets. She sees the group and mistakes Pfalz for a military escort, leading Aden to the barracks.
She believes that Aden is the record holder for a training obstacle course and sets him up to race against a burly recruit
named Photinus. The course is filled with danger and as the terrified Troy and Pfalz watch, Aden just barely manages
to survive with Adriana's help. Unfortunately, during the fuss, Antipas manages to escape once again.
Using Troy's abilities, they follow Antipas' trail to a large manor on the top of a hill. They slink through the
hallways until they spot him vanishing into a room. Giving chase, they manage to catch up with him and rescue Chandler
once Troy reveals that Antipas is her grandfather. Before they can escape, however, they realize someone is heading
for the room. The group hides behind a curtain just in time. Milady enters, talking with another officer.
As they listen to the conversation, the Phoenix Fighters realize that the officer is the original Lord Zelazny.
Pfalz faints, but fortunately, Milady and Zelazny do not detect the intruders. Troy opens a portal and they return
to the Phoenix House. After bidding a farewell to the Phoenix Fighters, she and Antipas return to Gonogah. Left
alone, Aden and Adriana try to determine where they stand with Pfalz. Pfalz explodes with anger, saying that she doesn't
intend to betray the Phoenix Fighters, but that she's torn apart. Left alone, Aden and Adriana fitfully wonder about
where Pflaz's loyalties will lie.
