Distant Melody

While grieving for the loss of her cousin Jacqui, Casey learns that Shawn kissed Lex.  She is so devastated that she accepts Quinn's invitation to leave the House for a night to visit a real garden with exotic plants.  Before leaving however, she makes a point of telling Tristan, in case something happens to her.  Adriana, in the meantime, off giving a lecture to Thuy Conservatory in Beigor, accepts the invitation of a handsome Hylian student named Federico to visit the same garden.  The two groups meet up and Quinn reads Feddy's mind, announcing that he is the son of Lorac Mann, the House's owner, and that he intends to drug Adriana.

Panicking, Feddy casts a spell over the three of them, trapping them in a dreamscape.  He tells them that he is willing to let them go and to keep the Phoenix House, his rightful inheritance, as long as they hand over his mother's necklace.  The three of them immediately explain they don't know what he's talking about.  Refusing to accept that as an answer, Feddy explains that he has wired access to all of their memories.  He will torture the answer out of them.  Feddy vanishes, and immediately, the three of them find themselves at a funeral.

Adriana recognizes the funeral as that of her former lover Gavin and his wife Shira.  Her memory plays out as it happened, despite the presence of Casey and Quinn in the scene.  Dagmar Hagen, in comforting Adriana, lets slip that Adriana was Gavin's mistress right in front of Shira's family.  Shira's parents, Erich and Bianca, humiliate Adriana in front of everyone, calling her a cheap, tawdry waste of life who will never amount to anything.  They advise her to simply disappear and save the world a lot of trouble.  Federico returns to demand the necklace again, but they still don't know where it is, despite the emotional torture.

The room becomes a dirty, dingy healer's laboratory.  Casey recognizes it as the room where she was forced to undergo a hysterectomy.  Her memory plays out and Adriana and Quinn watch as a frightened, thirteen year old Casey is abandoned by her parents and subdued, kicking and screaming, by an abusive healer.  When the memory fades, Federico returns, offering another opportunity for them to reveal the location of the necklace.  Although Casey is suffering from the emotional torture, they still have no answer to give to Feddy.  The scene changes to the deathbed of a Galaxian priestess named Egime.

Adriana and Casey are both at a loss as to what the scene is supposed to be, but Quinn suddenly admits that it is his own worst memory.  He steps into the scene and as the girls watch, they learn that Quinn had another true love, despite the Shadowman magic that only allows for one in a lifetime.  They learn that Quinn and Egime loved each other, but Egime refused to leave her mortal life behind to be with him and eventually died of old age, leaving him completely alone in the world until he somehow managed to break free and love again upon meeting Casey.  After Egime dies, Feddy returns to again demand the necklace, but his torture is cut short.  Tristan, worried about Casey failing to return, has arrived and easily dispatches of Feddy, freeing the others.

Returning to the House, Adriana and Casey share a moment, their friendship strengthened by living the memories together.  Later on, Casey asks Quinn how he was able to love again after losing Egime.  Quinn confesses that the reason he was banished from his home was because he bribed a Shadowman Carver into changing his life symbol, erasing the imprint of a soulmate on his soul because Egime made him promise he'd find someone else.  Meanwhile, Adriana and Aden find themselves wondering just what's so important about Lorac Mann's necklace.
