The Argeneau

When Aden and Adriana are up for leave, Lucien suggests they visit a town in Ithica he once stayed in, just across the border, for Aefie's Eve.  They agree and ask Lucien and Tranns to escort them to the village, called Ellis.  When the four arrive, however, they are shocked to find that Ellis has been renamed Argeneauville and that there is an enormous statue of Lucien erected in the town square.  The villagers start congregating, staring at Lucien.  To the crowd comes the mayor's wife, Philippa, who announces proudly that The Argeneau, who once healed her of a fatal illness, has returned.

Philippa's husband, Londo, invites Lucien and the others to stay in his manor and be his guests for the Aefie's Eve ball.  Once alone, Adriana, Aden, and Tranns question Lucien.  He explains that he had a brief love affair with Philippa, but had no idea that she had some kind of fatal illness, nor that the illness was cured once he left Ithica.  When they attend the ball that evening, Londo announces to everyone that Lucien will travel through the village in the morning, healing all the sick and tending to the wounded.

Since Lucien has no actual healing powers, Adriana accompanies him around town the next day, secretly using her limited powers to heal minor cuts and bruises.  They soon arrive, however, at the house of a very sick little girl named Andromeda.  Lucien spends some time with Andromeda, who is quite endearing, and the two of them bond over a love of fireflies.  He learns that her illness comes from contaminated drinking water which killed all the children in her neighborhood.  Despite his wealth and riches, Londo has claimed that there is no way to sanitize the water.  Lucien's heart goes out to Andromeda as she waxes poetic about the Argeneau, convinced that he will save her from dying.

Back at the mayor's mansion, Tranns talks with Philippa, sensing that she's hiding something, and Aden and Adriana go over Londo's books, realizing that he is stealing thousands from the tax payers.  The four Phoenix Fighters meet up and agree that Londo must be revealed for the fiend that he is.  They go to the town square, where the villagers gather to watch Londo present Lucien with a key to the city.  There, as the people fawn over Lucien, he announces Londo's crimes.  The mob turns angry and Londo pulls a knife, pointing it at Adriana, demanding that Lucien demonstrate his healing powers.  Before he can harm Adriana, however, the villagers rush the stage and carry Londo off, unable to believe that Lucien is a fraud.

Andromeda's father arrives at the scene, begging Lucien to hurry to her bedside and heal her.  Knowning that he can't do anything, Lucien takes Adriana and they go off to collect fireflies.  Meanwhile, Aden confronts Philippa about how she was really healed and she admits that she never was and is still dying.  Londo married her to collect her inheritance.  In the fen, Lucien and Adriana arrive at Andromeda's cottage.  Lucien presents her with the fireflies and she is grateful, but slipping away.  Lucien promises that if he ever has another daughter, he will name her Andromeda.  The girl dies with a smile, giving the fireflies back to Lucien to keep.
