Casey's cousin, Princess Aislinn, writes her a letter, telling her of tremors near Harper Palace. Although jealous
that Darla has the "finest scientific minds in the kingdom" investigating the crisis, Casey attempts to lend her expertise.
Her research, however, yields no results and so she asks Adriana to send a team to the Harper Palace silver mines to investigate.
Valero, Philip, and Tranns head out that night and discover that the rock mesa ceiling of the mine has been cracked and that
the grass for a full square mile around has been burned. They are unable to identify what could cause such devastation.
Calling on Quinn's help, Casey attempts to identify the beast. After ruling out every possible culprit, the team
is sent out a second time. This time, Valero, Philip, and Tranns spot an enormous creature with black fur and dark wings
flying over Harper Palace. With a breath of fire, the beast manages to completely destroy an entire column of Ebene
soldiers. A spark of familiarity hits Tranns and she returns to the House, pulling out her copy of the Book of Mudora.
There, she finds a passage speaking of "midnight beasts" that were destroyed by "the golden arrow of the gods." Adriana
identifies this as her uncle Enjolras, an immortal who was alive a thousand years ago when the creatures were said to go extinct.
Since the creatures are not completely extinct, having been awakened by Ebene mining, Enjolras is the only one who can
stop it. As Adriana hurriedly writes a letter to her mother, Ariadne prepares to go out on a sweep. On the roof,
she encounters Krieg. After a heated exchange of words, Krieg manages to trick Ariadne into screaming. The Phoenix
Fighters hurry out onto the roof where Krieg proposes an alliance between the Ebene and the Fighters to defeat the monster.
Adriana agrees and demands that the Ebene allow Rashia to leave Shaldani unmolested to deliver a message. The deal is
made and Rashia leaves. Meanwhile, Jake happens to wander into the kitchen, catching sight of Casey and Quinn speaking.
Casey begs him not to tell anyone that she's been spending time with Quinn and Jake reluctantly agrees.
Enjolras arrives at the Phoenix House, proving to be anything but a dauntless hero type. Nevertheless, he agrees
to help defeat the monster and leads a team of Philip, Adriana, Pipira, Tranns, Valero, and Lucien out to track it down.
Along the way, Krieg and his Ebene team joins up for the ride. Along the way, Enjolras demonstrates some of his unusual
powers, including the ability to see a person's future just by looking at them, a curse he has been unable to control for
a thosuand years. Additionally, all of the females (and Lucien) seem inexplicably drawn to Enjolras' good looks except
for Adriana, who assumes it's due to their blood relationship.
The group manages to track the creature. It puts up a bit of a fight, but in an impressive display, Enjolras manages
to mount it and feed it a bit of his own blood. Instant, the creature obeys his every command. Enjolras explains
that blood is the key to controling these beasts. Krieg takes advantage of their momentary fascination with the creature
and puts a knife to Adriana's throat. He instructs Enjolras to order the creature to attack the Phoenix House, starting
with the kitchen, or less he'll kill Adriana. Unwilling to sacrifice a life, Enjolras sends the monster with instructions.
It blasts, raining fire down onto the Phoenix House. The chemicals in the kitchen explode, blasting Casey, Quinn, and
Jake.
Pipira manages to disarm Krieg and bring him down with the help of Adriana and Enjolras. Meanwhile, Philip and
the rest of his team return to the House under seige. Khann is managing to control the fire, but no one can stop the
beast's continual attacks as long as it is following Enjolras' orders. Realizing that there is a blood relation between
them, Philip tries giving the beast an order. It obeys and rushes off to eat Krieg. Enjolras then instructs the
creature to consume itself. The House is put back into order, but Casey is severely wounded. Enjolras manages
to heal the wounds to her flesh, but warns that he cannot heal the danger to her ovaries, a fact that shocks everyone since
Casey has none. It is then than Quinn admits to taking her to Miranda, to the healing waters of the Twin Lakes.
Now, that celebratory trip might cost her her life.
